FINE ART
Bespoke Frames
by Rachel Joyner

Why not commission a bespoke upcycled frame to enhance your original art work?
Some pieces of artwork just need the most simple presentation, for them to look their best. However, other pieces can be enhanced by a bespoke framing idea. Sometimes, I might create a piece of artwork where the frame is part of the over all concept, with the painting being the start of the project and the frame design being the essential final touch.
For example:
The painting of the Hare, shown in the photo's (A Quiet Heart - availble for sale) is, on it's own a lovely vibrant acyrlic painting on canvas but felt somewhat incomplete to me, before I made the rustic and deliberately imperfect, real wood floating frame.
The piece represents a peaceful moment in nature and I wanted to maximise that feeling, also in it's literal sense. Bringing real nature into a natural scene.
Another example is the Purple Cow.
This was a commission where a client approached me to create a unique piece of artwork as a gift for a friend.
I was given a list of totally random things they like'd or were relevant to the friend, including:
-
Highland Cows
-
The Cadburys colour purple
-
They were a music teacher
-
They played the Claronette
From there, I developed the paintingconcept, then suggested that an uncycled frame could add a really personal final touch and thankfully the client agreed.
The frame was decorated with some of the musical score of two of her favourite pieces of music and given a black and white theme to represent the lines and layout of sheet music.
Each element was made specifically for the other and my client was delighted with the final outcome. I also have it on authority that the gift was well received by the friend. :-)
Where possible I will look to upcycle frames purchased from Charity Shops. Meaning the charity receives the money for the original frame and the wood is being recycled.
If a concept involves making the frame from scratch, I initially look to purchase/use reclaimed wood where possible.
